Services Performed
- Truck died on the customer and would only crank. Code scan only finds on glow plug fault code P0672
- Cylinder 2 Glow Plug Circuit, which will not cause this issue. Truck started fine in the AM, but did crank very slow like weak batteries. Let engine run for a while and began to notice an intermittent surge and almost stall. While monitoring the engine data, noticed the injector control pressure (ICP) reading is erratic when the surge occurs. At hot idle, the ICP is normally about 600 psi. Found that intermittently the reading will start to rise, well over the desired pressure, and the IPR% will drop trying to compensate and the engine will stall from actual ICP being too low. Found ICP sensor and/or connector have failed. Touching the sensor causes erratic readings and engine stall. Need to replace ICP and connector. P0672 resets during KOER glow plug test. Test #2 glow plug circuit (as well as all others) for correct amp draw and resistance. Found all are normal, code still resets. Trace to failed glow plug control module. All glow plugs and sub-harnesses have been replaced. Charge batteries fully and test charging system. Found only 35A output from alternator at idle, and 101A @ 200 RPM. Manufacture spec is 87A at idle, 120A max. Charging system test also showed failed diode test. Recommend replace alternator.
- Replace the ICP sensor and connector.
- GLOW PLUG CONTROL MODULE – Remove & Replace – F250 Super Duty,F350 Super Duty
- Replace the alternator
