Services Performed
- Dropped off Monday, started Wednesday with no issue. Charging system okay, 14.3V. Set up battery cables for parasitic drain test. Initial drain measured at 370mA. Wait one hour for modules to sleep and recheck drain. Now sitting at 315mA. The maximum allowable is 50mA, but is typically much lower. Trace source of draw by pulling fuses one by one to see when drain goes away. Found all excess drain goes away with the "stop lamp" fuse pulled from interior fuse panel. This fuse feeds six different circuits. All six can be unplugged and drain doesn't change. One is the OBD II connector and nothing is plugged into it, but found there is a wire tapped into the back side of the connector that leads to an aftermarket GPS/tracker behind the left dash side cover. Found this unit is hot to the touch and has a melted spot in the case. Removed the cover and found that the internal LiPo battery has started to fail and melt. With this unit disconnected the drain is normal at 30mA. Tracker is a GPS and cellular device that can be tracked by an app or web service, sometimes used for asset tracking by finance companies. Removed unit, but left wiring. If desired the wiring can be removed as well, no additional labor.
