    • Crankshaft Position – Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor A Incomplete Monitors: Fuel System EGR/VVT Catalyst Evaporative System Oxygen Sensor No current engine codes, just the P0016 in permanent code list. Looks like someone just cleared faults. Pulled up the VVT data on scan tool to check the Initial Position Learned Values for all four cams. Learned values are like base mechanical valve timing positions. Spec is 71-89 degrees for intakes, and 110-119 degrees for exhaust B1 In=0 B2 In=80.5 B1 Ex=109.5 B2 Ex=108.8 B1 Intake had not learned for some reason. Checked the systems ability to perform adjustments and found all four cams to adjust when VVT is commanded. Performed a learned position reset procedure, then road tested to learn new values. Confirm all did learn: B1 In=78.5 B2 In=80.3 B1 Ex=109.5 B2 Ex=108.6 Engine oil is full and clean. Need to road test for a while now to see if a fault returns and if the learned value changes. Cleared ALL system faults as well.

    • "B" Camshaft Position – Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance Bank 1 P000B
    • "B" Camshaft Position Slow Response Bank 1 Review scan data for all four actual cam positions and VVT solenoid commands. Confirm there is a fault occurring on the bank 1 exhaust cam timing control. Cam timing is hunting, swinging throughout a wide range while at a steady load. Other exhaust cam of steady, only varying a degree or two, while cam in question is swinging about 15 degrees above and below the target angle. Actual angles are okay at idle which means the chain timing is okay. This is a VVT phaser or oil control issue to that phaser. As a first step the VVT solenoid was removed from the B1EX cam and the oil control valve was found to be in normal condition as far as movement and not binding or sticking. The VVT solenoids are all the same part number on this engine, so the B1 intake and exhaust solenoids were swapped and the VVT control was again monitored on scan tool. The exhaust timing on both banks now match at there is no more laziness or over-shoot of timing. The B1 intake cam now shows to have slower adjustments that B2. At this point it looks like just the B1EX VVT solenoid needs to be replaced, timing relearned, and road tested to confirm that code no longer sets. If faults come back for same cam, the phaser(s) will need replacement.

    • Confirm trace amounts of engine oil in radiator and more in coolant reservoir. Since the reservoir picks up at the very top of the radiator, and oil floats on water/coolant, more will end up in reservoir. The PCV elbow that sometimes cracks and leaks will usually allow coolant into oil if a mix occurs, as the oil in this part is not pressurized, but the coolant is. This part was replaced at other shop and looks good. Oil in coolant is typical from a head gasket issue on these engines and is VERY common. External oil leaks from cam carriers/timing cover seal area as well. Used emissions analyzer and found 240ppm HC in coolant tank and 180ppm in radiator. Advise engine removal and tear down to remove heads and have tested at machine shop. Cam carrier/timing cover leaks addressed in head labor.
